I know there are a multitude of issues to consider when planning a new look for your kitchen. Here are four important things to think about:

1. Functionality – never lose sight of the function of your kitchen. It is often the very heart of a home where meals are prepared and eaten and the family gets together regularly. This means the space must be used as efficiently as possible. There is what is called the ‘kitchen triangle’ made up of the three essential parts; the sink, hob and fridge. Take some time to draw this triangle before you do anything else.

I have thought this for a while and now an official study has confirmed that fewer than half of the adult population are confident undertaking DIY projects in the home.

The study was carried out by Local Heroes, a home improvement and repair service backed by British Gas.

2,000 adults were involved in the survey and just 41% said they felt positive and confident enough to tackle DIY jobs around the home, preferring to employ a local tradesman to do the job instead.

I am aware that one of the most common problems people have in bathrooms is unsightly mould or mildew stains on walls and ceilings so I thought I would give you some ideas on how to deal with them.

Mould and mildew are the result of high humidity which occurs when there is a high proportion of moisture in the air. It often happens in the steamiest room in your home which is naturally your bathroom. In many cases it is an indicator of a problem with damp.

Stainless steel has proved to be a real boon to kitchen design. Not only does it have a smart, modern look and feel it is also long-lasting and easy to clean and maintain. Not only that, you can match it with a host of essential kitchen accessories made from the same material, such as kettles and toasters.
